'The Crimson Petal and the White

"The Crimson Petal and the White" 原本是一本小說，後來被BBC拍成了一部只有4集的短劇。
我是被劇集的名字吸引了而觀看的，"The Crimson Petal and the White" 多誘人的名字啊~
原來是出於一首一樣誘人的詩歌 "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal"


Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal

Now sleeps the crimson petal, now the white;
Nor waves the cypress in the palace walk;
Nor winks the gold fin in the porphyry font:
The firefly wakens: waken thou with me.

Now droops the milkwhite peacock like a ghost,
And like a ghost she glimmers on to me.

維多利亞時代的倫敦，故事主要圍繞著 William Rackham 和一個妓女 Sugar 及他們身邊的人
William，一個上流社會的紳士，重視自己的名聲多於一切，對於有精神病的妻子 Agnes、家庭、生意等都感到很煩厭，於是在 Sugar 身上尋找安慰。
Sugar，非常有名的名妓，永遠不會令客人失望，總給客人帶來最好的服務。可是她痛恨所有客人，包括 William。但在恨他們的同時她亦很清楚明白自己必須靠他們生存。在認識 William 之後她靠 William 的幫助慢慢進入了上流社會，更住進了 William 的家，成為了 William 的女兒的家庭教師。然後 Sugar 才發現，這個上流社會更不正常、更為黑暗。
Agnes，即使已經跟 William 結婚了，但不喜歡被 William 碰觸。她希望自己永遠都是小女孩，討厭自己有月事，更因此而絕食。完全承受不了自己已為人母的事實而崩潰。本應入醫院接受治療的她卻因為 William 的自私而一直留在家中，被社交界所排斥。

看完這劇的感想是：「好黑啊……」
相信「愛情」的人看了之後大概會開始懷疑「愛」
不相信的人就更不要看了，看了只會對「愛情」感到更絕望
達達：「妳就不要看這種故事了吧，妳會更不想去談戀愛的。」
然後對那個「華麗」的時代有幻想的人也不要看，幻想會破滅的
要知道，不管什麼時代，社會也會有最低下的一層

令我印象最深刻的一段是 Sugar 的姐妹問她「你愛 William 嗎?」Sugar 回答：「我不愛他，但我愛那個他帶給我的世界。」

其實 William 也是一樣，他不愛 Sugar ，只是愛 Sugar 帶給他的安慰。因此，在他知道 Sugar 懷有自己的孩子之後，他立刻辭去 Sugar 家庭教師的職務，要她回到貧民區的妓院去。為的只是不讓 Sugar 破壞自己跟有錢的小姐再婚的計劃吧。即使 Sugar 墮胎了，William 還是要趕走 Sugar，孩子的事大概也只是個借口而已。不過 Sugar 也不是善男信女，她最後也對 William 作出了報復。我是挺滿意這個結局的。

最後 quote 一下上面那個 preview 中 Sugar 唸的 "The City of Dreadful Night" 中的那幾句
"The world rolls round for ever like a mill;
It grinds out death and life and good and ill;
It has no purpose, heart nor mind nor will."
